Sigrún Eðvaldsdóttir started the Violin at age five in Reykjavik ,Iceland and completed her soloist’s examination from the Reykjavík College of Music in 1984, under the tutelage of Guðný Guðmundsdóttir, and received a Bachelor of Music from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia in 1988.
Sigrún has participated in a number of international violin competitions. She placed second in the Leopold Mozart Competition in 1987, won the bronze medal in the Sibelius Competition in 1990, and won second prize in the Carl Flesch Competition in 1992. She also received the Brøste Optimism Prize in 1992. Sigrún is described by fellow musician Björk Guðmundsdóttur as a force of nature, and she is mentioned as one of the most interesting violinists of the future in Henry Roth’s book Violin Virtuosos from Paganini to the 21st Century. Sigrún has held the position of first concertmaster of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra since 1998 and has appeared many times as a soloist with the orchestra. One of the founding members of the Miami String Quartet, she performed with the group from 1988-1990. She was awarded the Knight’s Cross
of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon for her contribution to Icelandic music in 1998.
Sigrún has participated in a number of music festivals, including the Marlboro Festival in Vermont, the L’Empéri Festival in Aix-en-Provence, the Kuhmo Festival in Finland, the Sangat Festival in Mumbai, India, the Reykjavík Midsummer Music Festival in Reykjavík,Nordisk Kammermusikfestival,Festival Sareema in Estonia and the Fejö Festival in Denmark. She has held recitals at venues around the world, including Weill Recital Hall in New York and Wigmore Hall in London, and
appeared throughout China on two concert tours there. She has also performed numerous times on cruise ships for P&O Cruises, sailing to ports the world over and she is also a champion of contemporary music and has had a number of new
works written for and dedicated to her. The Icelandic symphony orchestra has released a cd of live performances of
Sigrun which includes the Brahms,Sibelius,Berg and Dvorak violin concertos. She has had the opertunity to guestlead other orchestras in Scandinavia and loves to also meet her friends and play chamber music. She performed the Beethoven violin concerto May 2021 with the Iceland symphony orchestra and will perform the Brahms violin concerto with them in the fall.
